Apio Sharon is 19 year—old orphan who grew up under the mercy of a step mother hailing from Omwonyo Gweno, Amogo parish Aleptong District born from a family of 06 children. In 2016, Sharon sat S.4 from St. Andrew, Lugazi where she didn’t perform to the expectation because of the living condition, environment and harsh treatment by the step mum – who through stigma viewed educating a girl and an impaired girl to be a waste of time and resources. When she comes back home from school every evening, she is exposed to harsh labor, torture, hate and trauma and most times she sleep at 3:00 am daily. Worst of all, at the age of 13 years, her step mom forced her to be married off to a 60 year old man. This has tortured her to date though her clan members had to intervene and the local authority to save her life. To date, she has fallen victims of rape of men who take advantage of her condition as she’s doing casual labor (maid job, hotel services, etc) since she had to even find her own means of survival.
Nwoya Charity Foundation was the only hope for her rescue. When she heard about the presence and support being offered by the charity, she left home at 4:05 am in the wee- hour of the night and trekked for 50 km in order to seek support of sponsorship or education support. Sharon believes not all hope is lost for her as she aspires to get sponsorship in hand skills training in hair dressing in any of the institution in Uganda since there’s now no one to help pay her school fees. She is hoping any good Samaritan through Nwoya Charity may sponsor her invocation training so that she can be able to help her siblings and be self-reliant since she will be able to start an income generating activity after completion of her course.
